National Leadership Institute

The National Leadership Institute (NLI) is held three times per year in conjunction with the Board of Directors Meetings. SNMA and MAPS members from all parts of the country gather for a weekend of educational workshops on leadership training, organizational advancement and project development. During each session, educational tracks are crafted specifically for board members, regional and chapter members at large, and for pre-medical students.

As Secretary of the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS), Dr. Walker runs one of the largest agencies in state government, DHSS has 11 divisions, employs more than 4,000 people and in one way or another affects almost every citizen in Delaware. DHSS provides services in the areas of public health, social services, substance abuse and mental health, child support, developmental disabilities, long-term care, visual impairment, aging and adults with physical disabilities, state service centers, management services, financial coaching, and Medicaid and medical assistance. The Department includes three long-term care facilities and the state's only public psychiatric hospital, the Delaware Psychiatric Center. Dr. Tyeese L. Gaines, owner and lead media strategist for Doctor Ty Media LLC, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician as well as a 16-year news veteran. Dr. Ty has a master's degree in journalism from Northeastern University and previously served as health editor of theGrio.com (Formerly MSNBC) for 3 years.

Dr. Ty is a practicing emergency medicine physician. She completed her residency training at Yale-New Haven Hospital where she was chief resident, and later taught as a clinical instructor. In 2014, Dr. Ty became a fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians, and in 2011 was honored with a Top 40 under 40 award from the National Medical Association. Be an NLI Host Chapter

The Student National Medical Association offers the opportunity for your institution to host a National Leadership Institute/Board of Directors Meeting. Held three times a year (June, September, and January), these weekend programs (Friday-Sunday) include opportunities for your campus faculty and affiliated leaders to present topics to our members as well as a chance for you to showcase your institution to this unique student demographic. Medical and pre-medical students from around the country will gather at your institution to engage in leadership development activities.
