In this series, we would like to introduce you to the leaders of the national organization who work behind-the-scenes to keep the SNMA running!

 

Our next feature of this series is Sahlia Joseph-Pauline, who serves as the Region VIII Director for the 2018-2019 administrative year!

Sahlia K. Joseph-Pauline was born and raised in Jamaica, Queens. After graduating from high school, she attended Hampton University, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology as well as her Master's in Medical Science. Sahlia is currently a 3rd year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and she is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is extremely passionate about mentoring youth and community service, and she often volunteers her time serving the underserved communities within Philadelphia. Aside from volunteering, she enjoys traveling, trying new cultural dishes, watching movies and spending time with family and friends.

In this series, we would like to introduce you to the leaders of the national organization who work behind-the-scenes to keep the SNMA running!

 

Our next feature of this series is Brittany Flemming, who serves as both the Region VII Director and the Regional Director to the Executive Committee for the 2018-2019 administrative year!

Brittany Flemming is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina in May of 2015 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. During college, she was a competitive cheerleader and spent time in Europe, studying medical practice and policy in Estonia, Sweden, and Denmark. Immediately after graduating college, she commissioned as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and has since completed Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. Since matriculating at UConn School of Medicine in August 2016, she has served as an Urban Service Track Scholar, coordinating various health fairs and healthy eating initiatives in the underserved populations in and surrounding Hartford, Connecticut. As past president of the UConn chapter of the Student National Medical Association, she has been committed to promoting diversity and cultural competency in the field of medicine. She is planning to pursue a career in pediatrics, where her passion for zebras, arts and crafts is best understood!

Our next feature of this series is Adebusola Awosanya, who serves as the Region VI Director for the 2018-2019 administrative year!

Adebusola “Bussy” Awosanya was elected to the position of Region 6 Director in April 2018. Although she was born in Lagos, Nigeria, she considers the DC Metropolitan area, specifically Prince George’s County, Maryland, as her home. She attended Georgetown University earning her BS in Biology of Global Health. Upon completing that degree, she furthered her education through the George-Squared Program at Georgetown University and George Mason University where she received a graduate certificate in Advanced Biomedical Sciences. She currently attends the Howard University College of Medicine where she is set to graduate with a MD in 2020. Outside of SNMA, Bussy is active in the Class of 2020 Executive Board, HUCM Student Council, and other organizations within the college. She enjoys Netflix, traveling, museums, spending time with family and friends, as well as trying out new restaurants.

Our next feature of this series is Darren Gordon, who serves as the Region V Director for the 2018-2019 administrative year!

Darren Mikael Gordon is a native of Detroit, MI who earned his BS in Movement Science from the University of Michigan. He is currently an MD/PhD candidate at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. His career goals include landing a surgical specialty residency and subsequently serving as a Dean of Admissions or a President of a University. He enjoys hanging out with friends and outdoor activities such as kayaking (he actually owns one). He is interested in working with and starting minority outreach programs for students interested in medicine and science careers.

Our next feature of this series is Autefeh Sajjadi, who serves as the Region II Director for the 2018-2019 administrative year!

Autefeh Sajjadi grew up in Santa Cruz, California and received her Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Biology and Global Poverty from the University of California, Berkeley with a focus on comparing healthcare disparities between Latin America and the Middle East. Inspired to combine her trilingual background and love of global health, she further pursued graduate education in underserved medicine with a Master of Science in Medical Sciences from the Ponce Health Sciences University in Puerto Rico. Currently, she is a 3rd year medical student at Creighton University School of Medicine and is hoping to pursue Otolaryngology. At Creighton, she has been honored to be the Health Education Director for the Mayan Community Health Collaborative, a joint effort between medical students and local Mayan Refugees to help bridge gaps in health education and prevention. She has also served as the Acute Care Manager for the local student-run free clinic based out of Siena Francis Homeless Shelter. Lastly, she has been passionate about working with the Douglas County Department of Corrections to provide health education to the local prison population. Besides studying, she grew up an avid snowboarder and mountain biker and loves doing anything outdoors!

In this series, we would like to introduce you to the leaders of the national organization who work behind-the-scenes to keep the SNMA running!

 

Our next feature of this series is Gabriel Felix, who serves as the National President for the 2018-2019 administrative year!

Gabriel Felix is a 4th year medical student at Howard University College of Medicine.  He is originally from Rockland County, New York and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Binghamton University in upstate New York. After obtaining his degree, he worked at Kessler Foundation in West Orange, New Jersey in the Traumatic Brain Injury Research Department. While there he worked on several clinical trials and participated in the organization’s community outreach programs while developing his interests in advocacy for underserved populations. His work cultivated interests in health disparities, mental health, disability research, and leadership development.

In addition to serving as the National President, he has active leadership roles at his medical school campus. He currently serves as the vice-chair for the Council on Honor, Professionalism, and Ethics and is a council member on the Student Grievance Committee. He is also involved with the SNMA at a chapter and regional level. Outside of medical school and SNMA, Gabriel volunteers as a vocalist at his local church and enjoys running, yoga, and kick-boxing.

Our next feature of this series is Dr. Tiffani Houston, who serves as the National Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the 2018-2019 administrative year!

Dr. Tiffani Janae Houston is the first-born child of Mr. Ronald Chavis Houston II and Mrs. Rosilyn Elaine Bosley Houston. Tiffani was born in Mission Hills, California on August 30, 1988 and was raised in Dallas, Texas. Tiffani graduated magna cum laude in 2009 with a BA in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Spanish Language from the University of North Texas. Tiffani matriculated into the South Texas Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) in 2010 and earned her PhD in 2017 studying the molecular effects of environmental toxic exposures in urinary bladder cancer. Dr. Houston is a current fourth-year medical student and is applying for a combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency program with ultimate career goals as an established physician-scientist.

Throughout her time in medical school, Tiffani has received the Future Pediatrician Scholarship from the National Medical Association and was a two-time recipient of the Greehey Fellowship in Children’s Health. She has also earned a travel scholarship to attend the Keystone Conference on Transcriptional Regulation and Cancer Epigenetics. Tiffani has been the principle investigator of two NIH grants: R36AG048370 and F31ES025533.

Tiffani’s leadership activities include local contributions to UTHSCSA as well as national service on the Board of Directors for the Student National Medical Association and the Latino Medical Student Association. She has served as a student representative on the MSTP admissions committee as well as the cultural competency committee within the Department of Undergraduate Medical Education at UTHSCSA. She also participated in the Health Care Reform Forum hosted by the Center for Medical Ethics and Humanities at UTHSCSA.

Tiffani enjoys researching, watching, and discussing the Star Trek Universe, dancing Bachata and Meringue, as well as reading historical fiction novels. She also is an animal lover and has been a pet mom to both cats and dogs.

Our next feature of this series is Joyce Jones, who serves as the National Vice-President for the 2018-2019 administrative year!

Joyce Jones is a fourth-year medical student at Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS), North Chicago, Illinois. She is pursuing her Medical Degree {M.D.}, with interests in Family Medicine. Jones received a Bachelor’s of Science {B.S.} degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Currently, Ms. Jones is National Vice President of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). She has held numerous positions with SNMA, including Region II Associate Regional Director, Chicago Medical School Chapter President, and was selected as a Future Leadership Project Fellow in 2016-2017.

With a strong service interest, Ms. Jones served three years as Community Service Coordinator for the Chicago Medical School Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG); is a student member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) subcommittee for Educational Resources and Infrastructure; was as a Diversity and Inclusion Peer Mentor; and also a RFUMS Student Ambassador. She also volunteers at numerous mobile community care clinics focused on increasing access to care in underserved, low-income, minority communities.

Ms. Jones was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. From age nine, she lived in Highland Park, Illinois where she received her elementary and secondary schooling. In addition to her academic and leadership responsibilities, Ms. Jones enjoys traveling, spending time with family and loved ones, and loom knitting.

Our next feature of this series is Toddchelle Young, who serves as the Pre-Medical Board Member for the 2018-2019 administrative year!

Toddchelle graduated from Georgetown University with her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with Population Health Certificate and received her Masters in Public Health in Sociomedical Sciences with a Social Determinants of Health Certificate from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. She is currently completing prerequisites to apply to medical school for Fall 2020, having interests in Family Medicine. Toddchelle has been involved in harm reduction outreach, HIV/AIDS and breast cancer research, as well as her most recent international health work assisting with tuberculosis (TB) stigma research in South Africa. She currently works at the National Institute of Health, and will be transitioning to Georgetown University as Director of Research for the Hub for Equity and Innovation in Higher Education. Toddchelle enjoys travelling the world, braiding hair, and mentoring in her free time. She is from New Haven, CT and currently resides in North Bethesda, MD.

In this series, we would like to introduce you to the leaders of the national organization who work behind-the-scenes to keep the SNMA running!


Our next feature of this series is Damilola Olatunji, who serves as the National Treasurer for the 2018-2019 administrative year!

Damilola Olatunji is a 4th year medical student at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She was born in Nigeria and moved to the United States (Atlanta, GA) at the age of 10. During her time as an undergraduate student at Brown University, she was actively involved in the university’s dance, service and leadership communities. She was a Residential Peer Leader, served as a Co-Director of one of the university’s dance companies, and served as the President of the Lambda Iota Chapter of one of the nation’s leading service organizations - Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2011.

 

After earning her degree, Dami received a highly competitive Post-baccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award from the National Institutes of Health through which she worked as a Research Fellow and Patient Care Coordinator for the Pediatrics and Developmental Neuroscience Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health. In 2013, she attended Georgetown University and earned a Master of Science degree in Physiology and Biophysics. Dami matriculated at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2015 and has been an active member of her medical school community, maintaining involvement and holding several leadership positions in organizations such as OSUCOM’s chapter of The Student National Medical Association, 5-2-1-0 Healthy Kids, and The Student Council.

 

Prior to being elected as the National Treasurer of The SNMA, she served as a Chapter Treasurer during her 2nd year of medical school and a Regional Treasurer (Region 5) during her 3rd year. Dami will acquire her M.D in May 2019 after which she looks forward to commencing her residency training in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In her free time (if such a thing exists in medical school), Dami loves indulging in Talenti Gelato while catching up on her favorite TV shows including Queen Sugar, Grey’s Anatomy, The Blacklist, The Flash and Arrow – just to name a few.
