Meet the Board with Sergeine Lezeau

Posted By Administration, Saturday, October 28, 2017
The 2017 SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC) was held in Atlanta, GA on April 12th - 17th. It was at this convention that Ms. Sergeine Lezeau was appointed to the position of Publications Co-Chair.  At the 2017 AMEC, medical students and professionals gathered to attend a wide range of educational and networking events. It is consistently the largest gathering of underrepresented, minority medical students at any time of the year in any place across the nation.

About Sergeine

She is the daughter of Registered Nurse Eveline Lezeau, BSN and Computer Programmer Joseph Lezeau, who immigrated to the United States from Haiti to pursue their college education. Early on, they instilled in her the values of higher education, Haitian culture, and maintaining a spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ. Sergeine and her younger brother, Jovin Lezeau, grew up embracing these ideals in South Florida, where she completed the International Baccalaureate program at Lincoln Park Academy before joining the Gator Nation in 2008. Sergeine graduated in 2011 from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish. A year later, she catapulted her medico-scientific journey at Florida Atlantic University as a Biology Honors Research student identifying correlations between the latent HIV reservoir and HIV patients. Currently, she is a member of the class of 2020 at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) in Auburn, Alabama. She serves as Vice President for VCOM's Hispanic Community Medical Outreach student organization and helps raise funds for VCOM's medical mission trips to underserved Hispanic countries. Aside from engaging in research, leadership, and volunteering, she also enjoys teaching her peers and mentoring first-year medical students. Such experiences have inspired Sergeine to become a physician with an academic appointment and to serve as the Dean for Diversity of a medical school one day.

When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
  • The next Judge Judy
What are some of your favorite hobbies?
  • Latin dancing, traveling, playing piano, writing/editing of course
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
  • Teleporting everywhere to avoid traffic, accidents, speeding tickets, TSA, travel costs, and to be able to sleep in longer
What’s your favorite thing about the SNMA?
  • Its self-empowering nature through the conferences, board meetings, and the many diverse opportunities year-round.
What is one of the ways that serving on the SNMA Board of Directors has impacted you?
  • In just 5 months, being on the board has already made a lasting impression upon my success. When I have a meeting or interview, this is what impresses them the most on my CV, despite having research experience and a leadership position at my school because this sets me apart the most.
What goal(s) does the Publications Committee aim to achieve this year?
  • To strengthen the solidarity of our members and highlight their powerful voices, especially given the current political climate of our nation.  We are providing SNMA members with opportunities to interact more with other members as well as with SNMA leaders via social media to strengthen our bond. We are also equipping members with more platforms to express themselves as reflected by the JSNMA cover contest and themes this year such as Addressing Racial Bias in Medicine, which will be published this Fall so stay tuned to see what your friends and colleagues in SNMA had to say!!
What skills would be useful to have if joining your committee?
  • Video editing, being Social Media savvy, creative brainstorming, interviewing skills, providing feedback on journal submissions, and editing journals. However, our committee encourages any SNMA member with simply an interest in social media advertising, reading, and/or writing to join here today!
